The IP stands for "Ingress Protection". The IP rating system indicates how well a security camera is protected from dust and water. The first digit of the IP ratings can range from 0 to 6 and notates the protection from dust intrusion. The higher the number, the greater the protection. The second digit can range from 0 to 9 and notates the water ingress protection (water intrusion protection).
IP67 security cameras are completely protected from dust intrusion. This is designated by the number 6. IP67 security cameras are completely protected against water intrusion even if fully submerged under water up to 1 meter / 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. An IP67 camera is much more weatherproof than cameras with IP65 or IP66 ratings. These security cameras can be installed in very harsh environments.

- What IP rating levels does CCTV Camera Pros recommend? Our most highly recommended IP rating is IP67 because it goes above and beyond what it required to provide protection dust and water intrusion.
- Why are some Viewtron cameras only IP66 rated? Viewtron alarm security cameras have a built-in speaker that can be used for active audio alarms or two way communication. Unfortunately, there is no way to make a camera housing that has a speaker holes IP67 rated because it can not be submerged in water. That being said, IP66 is also an excellent ingress protection rating that provides 100% protection from solid particles (dust) and 100% protection against heavy rain from any direction.
- What is the water ingress protection of these cameras? IP67 cameras have 100% water ingress protection from powerful water jets in any direction. They even have water protection if they are submerged in water for up to 30 minutes. CCTV Camera Pros installed IP67 rated Viewtron IP cameras on a light pole behind our office back in 2020. These cameras have been directly exposed to the hot, humid, and very rainy climate of South Florida. These cameras and junction boxes are still in excellent condition.
