CCTV Power Supply Box, Power Distribution Box for CCTV
A CCTV power supply box, also known as a power distribution box, allows surveillance system installers to easily manage the power to multiple CCTV cameras at a central point (usually at the location of the DVR). This allows your camera installation to be neater. For example, instead of having 8 individual transformers plugged into a power strip/electric surge protector, all of your camera power wires can neatly be run to a 9 port power supply box. We also have 4 port and 18 port models available.
Power supply boxes are typically installed near your DVR. These boxes are very simple to install. Each camera's power cable simply screws into the power distribution block inside the box. The power supply box plugs into a standard power outlet. No electrician is required for installation. All of our boxes now use
PTC auto reset fuses.

Wiring a CCTV Camera to Power Supply Box with Premade Siamese Cable
This video shows installers how to connect a CCTV camera to a
12V DC power supply box using premade Siamese security camera cables. The process is exactly the same for 24VAC power supply boxes, except that the cable polarity does not matter with alternating current (+ and - does not matter with 24VAC wiring).
Our latest model power supply boxes use PTC auto reset fuses instead of traditional one time use fuses. The above image shows a power supply box on the left that uses traditional fuses. The one on the right is our latest generation model, which uses PTC. PTC is much more convenient because when there is a short circuit, the PTC turns the circuit off. When the short circuit is fixed, the PTC automatically resets. There is no burnt out fuse to replace.
Below are some examples of how multi-channel power supply boxes can be installed with analog CCTV cameras, HD security cameras, and audio surveillance microphones. We have the following complete how-to guides available. Please use the below links to access complete guides.
Wiring Diagrams
Here are the most common ways that power supply boxes are used in video and audio surveillance installations. Please access the detailed guides using the above links.
Security Camera Installation with RG59 Siamese Cable Spool
Here is a complete security camera system installation diagram that uses an RG59 cable, a
1080p HD CCTV camera (dual voltage), a hybrid AHD / HD-TVI / analog CCTV DVR, and a power supply box - which can be 12V DC or 24VAC. You can access the complete installation guide here.
Security Camera Installation with Pre-made Siamese Cable
This
CCTV camera installation uses a pre-made Siamese cable with a power supply box. A PT-3 power lead allows the 2.1mm power plug on the pre-made cable to connect to the screw terminals of the power supply box.
Audio Surveillance Microphone Installation
The power supply boxes on this page can also be used to power low voltage audio surveillance microphones. For example, our
best selling 12V DC audio surveillance microphone is very commonly paired with security cameras and our Viewtron security camera DVR to record video and audio. Professional and DIY installers can use premade Siamese cable or RG59 Siamese spools for this type of application. Access the complete audio surveillance installation guide here.
Pre-made audio video power cables are used in this example installation of a security camera and microphone, but this install uses a power supply box instead of an individual DC transformer. The PT-102 power cable splitter is still used to split the 2.1mm female power plug of the pre-made cable to two 2.1mm female power plugs to allows both the camera and mic to share the power supply. A PT-3 power lead is used to connect the pre-made cable to a 12V DC power supply box on the DVR side of the cable run.
Here are some frequently asked questions related to power distribution boxes for CCTV.
- What size power boxes are available?
Power distribution boxes for CCTV installations are available in 4 channel, 9 channel, and 18 channel models.
- Are these boxes only available in 12 Volt DC?
12V DC and 24VAC model power supply boxes are available.
- What is the advantage of using a power supply box over single security camera power adapters?
Multi-channel power supply boxes make for a much neater cable installation by consolidating all of the power for your security cameras into one location. Using many individual power supplies required multiple power strips for all of the plugs.
- How do I connect pre-made security camera cables to a power box?
You can use a PT-3 CCTV power cable lead to convert the 2.1mm power jack to raw power cables. The raw cables can now attach to the screw terminals on the power block. You can find detailed instructions and images on using pre-made security camera cable here.
- What is PTC?
PTC stands for positive temperature. It is a polymer based device used in electronics instead of fuses. The conductive polymer material in PTCs increases in resistance when the circuit is overloaded and limits the current. When the circuit overload is corrected, PTCs "self reset" and allow the current to flow normal again. This is a big advantage over one time use fuses which require manual replacement when they burn out.
- Can CCTV power boxes be used to supply power to devices other than CCTV cameras?
Yes, it is typical to use these boxes to also power alarm devices such as motion detectors, sirens, and alarms. You can use a 12 volt DC box to power any 12 volt device. You can use a 24V AC box to power an 24V device. Of course the current (amperage) requirements of the device must also fit into the limits of the box that you choose.
